Newsletter #0001 - Getting Fired Doesn't Always Suck
Welcome to the FIRST edition of Nikonomics! After more than a year of collecting emails, some of you have probably forgotten how you got on this list in the first place but I promise, it was for a good reason.
Let me jog your memory:
My name is Nikolas Hulewsky and I was fired on February 19, 2020; the same day my wife went into labor with our 4th son.
What I thought was the worst thing in the world turned out to be a massive blessing. Here’s the long story (if you’re interested).
Getting fired was a massive turning point. I realized that I never want to be at the mercy of anyone else’s generosity ever again. That’s why I became an entrepreneur and launched into the craziest 5 years of my life!
May 2020: Started a Hospice from scratch
June 2020: Bought my first businesses through the SBA ($3.2M RCM, Scribe and Staffing companies)
May 2021: Bought Home Health, Home Care and Staffing companies ($1M license deal doing $500k in revenue)
September 2021: Bought a crypto mining company with my best friend and business partner Chris Koerner (of The Koerner Office). Did $10M in revenue and $1.5M in EBITDA in the first 3 months (lost $1M since haha)
January 2022: Sold/Divested medical staffing company
June 2022: Sold the RCM company (grew EBITDA from $400k to $1.2M in 2 years)
July 2022: Chris and I launched cofounders
August 2022: Incubated our AI Healthcare company
2022 Top-line Revenue: $28M (high water mark)
June 2023: Launched a Tree trimming business in Dallas
July 2023: Sold my Home Health and Hospice company after growing to $12M in revenue from $500k (earlier acquisition) in under 2 years
February 2024: Launched Nikonomics Podcast (124 episodes and counting)
May 2024: Invested in my first searcher deal
June 2024: Bought my first RV Park
July 2024: Partnered and invested in TRIBE, a community for Top early and mid stage Entrepreneurs
August 2024: Cofounders launched Side Vending
January 2025: Cofounders launched Repeat Leads
February 2025: Sold RV Park (slight gain but needed to simplify)
It’s been busy!
You can check out a much longer and in depth bio here.
I have ONE goal with this newsletter:
To help you make your first Million Dollars in Entrepreneurship.
I know that sounds click-baity but I don’t know else to say it. haha
Because of my experience buying, starting, scaling and selling businesses, I offer REAL advice from REAL learnings (both wins AND losses).
So what can you expect each week?
The ACTION: One piece of actionable advice on Entrepreneurship (buying, starting, scaling or selling) with a framework for implementation
Podcast Summaries: A summary of what I learned on that week’s interviews with successful Entrepreneurs (recapping business models and key takeaways)
Business Listing Analysis: My thoughts on one business listing with green and red flags, valuation, who I think should/shouldn’t buy this business, etc
Entrepreneur AI Roundup: Things are changing so fast, what do you NEED to know this week?
Question of the Week: I will answer one subscriber question on buying, starting, scaling, selling or anything else related to their business. Submission link at the end of this email.
This won’t be full of “theory” or regurgitated ideas. I won’t waste your time with that. This will be relevant, succinct, approachable and actionable.
